Zoid Bootlegs

New Star Zooid

The most bold of the Zoid Bootlegs has to be the Korean Zooid series. While I do not yet have their Salamander clone I can say that their Red Horn bootleg is a direct rip off. Unlike other series no attempt was made to change the color or recast a new creature. The casting of Red Korando is fairly poor, with bits of flash and surface blemishes. While it might make for an interesting customizing fodder, the cost of shipping from Korean negates any practical use for this guy.

The box says it all:
"Red Korando, his swivelling air defence cannon is aways kept at action stations. No air attack can penetrate his defence. He has an armour plated control pod to protect his servant andriod, and opening jaws that will destroy anything they catch."

PlayGo Dyno-Rassic

Well maybe "bootleg" isn't the right word. These are more like "clones", albeit weird, misformed ones. Produced by PlayGo LTD. of Hong Kong and made in China, these "Dyno-Rassic" toys were clearly made using modified Zoid molds. They are battery powered, only instead of having the batteries in the toy they are external in a remote unit attached by a wire. Two buttons on the "remote" let the toy go forward or backwards. There are the famous rubber stoppers, but at the articulation points screws are used. On the T-Rex a gray rubber mindrider is included, and his eyes light up. Except for the claws and teeth he has a burnished bronze chrome finish. The Saber Tooth Tiger has a red chrome finish. (Those are the only two units that I actually have.)
Gojulas and T-Rex, side by side.
Gojulas and T-Rex, close up While the T-Rex is a full head shorter then the real Gojulas, for the benefit of side by side comparison I put them together for the photo to the left. It shows that the heads are identical. The spin fins are as well, but the arms and legs differ. The tail is close, and it's tip is the same. The body is slightly smaller and only remotely like the originals. Forward movement is the same, with chomping mouth and waving arms. Except for plugging the battery packs wire in there was no assembly required.
Many thanks to Doug Mikkelson, the collector who bought these clones to my attention. According to him, the breakdown for three of the units is pretty easy,

The forth unit, "Dimetrodon", is more complicated. The head looks like a modified "Redhorn", and the body an altered "Spinfin". Weird.
More to come, including Dimetrodon and an eye searing multicolored Zoid bootleg to boggle your mind.
